Vila Vella (Old Town)

The walled Old Town is the emblem of Tossa de Mar and the only fortified medieval town which still exists on the Catalan coast. Declared a National Historical-Artistic Monument in 1931, the old town of Tossa is full of narrow cobbled streets lined up with stone houses.

Must see: Oval archway which is the access to Vila Villa through the parade yard, the Church of Sant Vicenç, the Tossa Lighthouse and the Municipal Museum of Tossa de Mar.

The Municipal Museum

By the end of the 19th century, Tossa had already been a source of inspiration for many artistic works but in the 1930s it truly became an attraction for many artists and an important avant-garde focal point. Jaume Vilallonga, Rafael Benet and Pere Créixams were some of the artists who lived in Tossa whereas André Masson, Georges Bataille and Marc Chagall (who coined Tossa’s nickname “Blue Paradise”) temporarily lived and worked here, some of them until the start of the Spanish Civil War. In 1935, a group of intellectuals founded the first museum of contemporary art in Spain: the Municipal Museum in Tossa de Mar, which today still holds most of the archaeological remains of the Ametllers Roman villa as well as an important art collection.

Ametllers Roman villa

Discovered in 1914 by Dr. Ignasi Melé, the Ametllers Roman villa (1st century BC – 6th century AD) is one of the most important ones of its kind from the ancient Tarraco province. Exclusively dedicated to vine growing and wine export, it is a classic example of the agricultural exploitation in the Mediterranean Roman sphere. The villa is located on the eastern side of the Can Magí hill, facing the sea and overlooking the bay. Most of the structures which are still standing today are from the Augustan period (late 1st century BC – early 1st century AD).

Platja Gran, Mar Menuda and Es Codolar beaches

Tossa’s landscape is mountainous and the proximity to the sea of the hills result in a rocky coastline, a traditional sight on the Costa Brava, with many cliffs and small coves, many of which are hard to access. Tossa de Mar has a total of 15 beaches and coves, some of them quiet and remote and other more accessible and popular.

In the town centre, at the feet of the Tossa walls, is the main beach, Platja Gran, almost 400 yds. in length. This beach is ideal to go swimming, a pleasant stroll or a nice drink at La Terraza del Diana while you enjoy the views of the walls and Vila Vella.

On the northern tip of Tossa, a 10-minute walk from the old town, is the start of the spectacular stretch of rocky coastline which goes all the way to Sant Feliu de Guíxols. This is where the other beach in Tossa is, Mar Menuda, a beach with thick sand which is 100 yds. in length. In between the rocks which surround it is a small and secluded cove called Sa Banyera de Ses Dondes.

On the other side, at the feet of Vila Vella, in the old town of Tossa de Mar, is another small beach, Es Codolar, the starting place for fishermen and passing point on the famous Camí de Ronda. Es Codolar is a small cove, of 80 yds. in length by 60 yds. in width approximately.

Nature

The town limits of Tossa are defined by a valley, isolated from the nearby towns by the summits of the Cadiretes-L’Ardenya Massif (Puig de Sillas – 1,702 ft.; Turó d’en Rosell – 1,115 ft. among others), in which the town is fully integrated. This peculiar location between the mountains and the sea make Tossa a unique paradise. Active tourism lovers can find many hiking trails and mountain bike routes such as Camí de Ronda, which runs along the coastline and leads to different coves and beaches or the routes which go into the Cadiretes Massif.

Leisure

Tossa offers a wide range of leisure activities for all tastes and ages, from water sports on its beaches and coves to traditional cuisine such as the seafood dish Cim i Tomba or the famous Ava Gardner kisses, which are sweet cakes you can buy in the town bakeries. You can also enjoy a good film in the Tossa cinema or find a hidden gem in the many craft markets and festivals which take place during the summer months. There are also many water parks (Water World, Gnomo Park, Marineland…) and golf courses located nearby.
